The son of immigrants, Leguizamo was raised in New York and started his acting career in the early 1980’s in stand up. Though it wasn’t up until the 1990’s that he came to prominence, Leguizamo had some interesting first appearances on TV and even on music videos during the 1980’s. In 1984 he played a friend of Madonna’s boyfriend on the music video “Borderline”, and in 1986 he made his TV debut with a small part on the hit series “Miami Vice”. Julie Newmar” together with Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes, playing one of his most unique roles, the young and naive drag queen Chi-Chi Rodriguez that road travels across the U.S with older and experienced drag queens Noxema Jackson and Vida Boheme, played by Snipes and Swayze. In 1996 he scored another big role as Capulet in “Romeo + Juliet”. Over the years Leguizamo has became more and more versatile as an actor and artist, not dedicating himself to movies or TV. More recently, in 2017 he debuted “Latin History for Morons”, a show about the participation of Latin Americans throughout US history and was nominated for the 2018 Tony Award for Best Play.
