Sonny & Cher peak to No.1 with their classic “I Got You Babe” in 1965
One of Pop’s most famous songs, “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher, was written by Sonny Bono, then a a songwriter and record producer for Phil Spector, in 1965 for himself and his then-wife, Cher. First released on July 9, 1965 in the United States as the first single taken from Sonny & Cher’s debut studio album “Look at Us”, it sold in the U.S alone more than 1 million copies and was certified Gold. It peaked to the Hot 100 No.1 on August 14, 1965. But also worldwide it topped the charts, making Sonny & Cher one of the defining Pop duo’s and acts of the 1960’s. They released several other hit songs and singles, such as “What Now My Love” and “The Beat Goes On”, but it’s “I Got You Babe” that remains their most memorable and signature song. Of course as we all know this was the beginning of Cher’s legendary and iconic career that lasts to this day. Sonny Bono, who turned to politics later in his life, passed away on January 5, 1998 from a skiing accident. The famous couple, who divorced during the mid 1970’s, are the parents of Chaz Bono (formerly Chastity Sun Bono).
