German Top Model Claudia Schiffer: A Fashion Icon
The German Claudia Maria Schiffer, one of the most famous Top Models of all time, was born on August 25, 1970 in Rheinberg, then West Germany. She quickly rose to international success during the early 1990’s as part of the Supermodel star group that included also Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen among others. She was accidentally spotted in 1987, at age 17 in a nightclub in Düsseldorf by Michel Levaton, the head of Metropolitan Model Agency, and was signed to the agency as a model.During the early 1990’s Schiffer became the new face of Chanel selected by Karl Lagerfeld, and the first blonde to represent the Chanel house. Back then she was often compared to French actress Brigitte Bardot due to their similar facial features and hair. Claudia appeared on more than one thousand magazine covers and holds the record for the model with the most magazine covers, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1993 she met magician David Copperfield when he brought her on stage to participate in a mind reading act and in his flying illusion, and they became engaged in January 1994. Sometimes the model appeared on stage with Copperfield to act as his special guest assistant in illusions including being levitated, guillotined, and sawn in half One of the 1990’s most famous couples, they they announced they had ended their relationship, citing work schedules in 1999. The model has also done some side work as an actress including the 1994 movie “Ritchie Rich”, “The Blackout” in 1997 and also a cameo appearance on Ben Stiller’s “Zoolander” in 2001 among many other TV appearances and movie appearances. Claudia Schiffer, who now lives in the U.K, remains an active figure in the fashion world and still models occasionally. We look back at some of her photos.
