The iconic country music singer Dolly Parton was born on this day in 1946

Born on January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, Dolly Parton was one of 12 children. After high school, she moved to Nashville to pursue music and initially found success with country star Porter Wagoner before embarking on a solo career marked by hit songs like “Joshua,” “Jolene,” “The Bargain Store,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Here You Come Again,” “9 to 5” and “Islands in the Stream,” among many others. Parton is a highly skilled singer-songwriter, known for thoughtful narratives and distinctive vocals, she has won many major awards and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. She has also starred in films like “9 to 5” (1980), “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” (1982), for which she earned a Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress, “Steel Magnolias” (1989), and “Joyful Noise” (2012). She opened her highly successful theme park Dollywood in 1986. To date, Parton has recorded nearly 100 albums and singles and continues to tour regularly.
