Lenny Kravitz scores his first UK No.1 with “Fly Away” on this day in 1999

Written by Lenny Kravitz and released on December 29, 1998. “Fly Away” gave Lenny Kravitz his first UK No.1 on February 14, 1999. The song became one of his most popular ones and regarded as a 90’s classic, the same way his 1993 hit “Are You Gonna Go My Way” is. The song also helped to expand the success of his fifth studio album, “5” in Europe and earned Kravitz a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Male Rock Performance. While it went to number one on the UK Singles Chart in the United Kingdom, in the United States it reached number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 but topped both the Mainstream Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks charts. In New Zealand, it peaked at number 8 and was certified Gold.
