Slade breaks a record held by The Beatles in 1973 with their smash hit “Cum On Feel The Noize”
Slade always were one of the most prolific hit makers of the 1970’s British Glam Rock scene, delivering several Rock hits that shifted into anthems and remain popular to this day. On March 3, 1973, at the peak of Glam Rock popularity, Slade broke a record held by The Beatles when they entered the UK singles charts straight at No.1 with “Cum On Feel The Noize”, this achievement had not been seen since The Beatles’ “Get Back” in 1969. Written by lead vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, and produced by Chas Chandler (The Animals), the single was first released in the UK on the 23 February 1973 backed with “I’m Mee, I’m Now, an’ That’s Orl”. Originally titled “Cum On Hear the Noize”, the song tries to capture the atmosphere found at the band’s concerts, songwriter Holder changed the title after recalling one of the band’s 1972 UK concerts, where he “felt the sound of the crowd pounding in [his] chest”. “Cum On Feel The Noize” remained at the top position of the UK singles charts for four consecutive weeks and sold 500,000 copies in its first three weeks of release. Despite the huge success in Europe, the song only made it to the bottom position (98) of the US Hot 100, but some years later, in 1983, American heavy metal band Quiet Riot covered the song and their version went on to reach No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1983 helping their album “Metal Health” becoming a number-one hit. As for the original Slade version, a music video created by Caravelle, was filmed in 1973 to promote the single, recorded at the band’s concert at the Hague in the Netherlands. Other hits of Slade included “Merry Xmas Everybody” “Coz I Luv You” and “Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me”.
