Swedish 90’s hitmakers Ace Of Base climb to No.1 at the U.S Hot 100 in 1994 with “The Sign”

Sweden always been prodigal in presenting to the world Pop music hitmakers, as it happened during the 1970’s with ABBA and during the 1980’s with Roxette. In 1993, another Swedish Pop act was getting ready to rule the charts worldwide, Ace Of Base, with their Dance beats, peaked to No.1 with “The Sign”, now one of the 1990’s most memorable songs. Released on October 29, 1993 in Europe, “The Sign”, written by band member Jonas Berggren, was described as a “techno reggae confection” with a “killer chorus”. The band already had charted in Europe with their 1992 hit “All That She Wants”, but it was “The Sign” that earned them millions of records sold worldwide. It wasn’t a surprise when on November 21, 1993 “The Sign” entered directly the European chart Border Breakers at No.10. By then, the song was already a hit all across Europe. Ace Of Base didn’t took long to conquer the U.S market and by March 12, 1994, “The Sign” started a six week run at No.1 on the US singles chart, becoming the top song on Billboard’s 1994 Year End Chart. The song became so popular in the U.S that the American release of their album “Happy Nation” changed the title to “The Sign”. Ace Of Base other hits included “Don’t Turn Around”, “All That She Wants” and “Happy Nation”. Ace Of Base released four studio albums between 1992 and 2002, which sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it the third-most successful Swedish band of all time, after ABBA and Roxette. Despite their international success during the 90’s, they never were able to repeat it and by 2009, the original line up of the band split.
