The Village People “G.I” and “sailor” Alex Briley turns 77 today
Alex Briley was born on April 12, 1947 in Harlem, New York. A minister’s son,he sang in church from an early age and studied voice at the University of Hartford. Briley was introduced to producer/composer Jacques Morali by Village People member Victor Willis. He originally performed in jeans and a T-shirt, but he took the role of a soldier for the album “Cruisin'” in 1978 and when the group recorded “In the Navy” in 1979 he appeared as a sailor. The Village People were one of the most successful bands to emerge from the 1970’s Disco scene. Their presence and influence on Pop Culture have been enormous for decades. They achieved a huge worldwide success that to this day remains untouchable. At first oriented for the Gay population of New York, the band quickly attracted different types of fans and, though still strongly associated with the LGBT community, their upbeat and happy songs continued to appeal to everyone today. Alex Briley sung in songs such as “Y.M.C.A”, “In The Navy”, “Macho Man” or “Go West” that remain among the most popular Village People hits.
