Former Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm turns 69 today

Louis Andrew Grammatico, known as Lou Gramm, was born on May 2, 1950, in New York. He began his music career during the late 1960’s but it was in the late 1970’s, as the original vocalist for Foreigner that he achieved success. Foreigner’s first eight singles cracked the Billboard Top 20, making them the first band since The Beatles to achieve this. Gramm performed vocals on all of Foreigner’s hits including “Hot Blooded”, “Feels Like the First Time”, “Cold as Ice”, “Long, Long Way from Home”, “Double Vision”, “Blue Morning, Blue Day”, “Head Games”, “Dirty White Boy”, “Urgent”, “Juke Box Hero”, “Break It Up” and “Say You Will”. A little-known fact is that Lou Gramm co-wrote most of the songs for the band, which achieved two of its biggest hits with the ballads “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and the popular 1980’s Rock ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is”, a #1 hit internationally in 1985. Gramm released his first solo album, Ready or Not, in January 1987 and in the same year he also contributed the song “Lost in the Shadows” to the soundtrack for the horror film “The Lost Boys”. Encouraged by his solo success, Gramm departed Foreigner in 1989, but he wouldn’t achieve the same type of success as he did when singing for the band, and Foreigner became somehow a band of the past during the 1990’s. He re-joined Foreigner in the late 1990’s, however, departed once again from the band in 2003. In 2017, Gramm joined his old bandmates in concert to perform a few Foreigner songs. Since 2009, he hasn’t released new music, his latest album, from that year his “Lou Gramm Band” that failed to chart. Lou Gramm turns 69 today.
