A pioneer of Rock music films or movies, “Help!”, originally titled “Eight Arms to Hold You”, The Beatles second adventure into cinematics premiered on July 29, 1965 at the London Pavilion Theater in the West End of London in the presence of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and the Earl of Snowdon. After their film debut with “A Hard Day’s Night” in 1964, “Help!! reached another milestone on The Beatles career and Beatlemania worldwide, and served as a serious influence on the development of what in the future would be known as music videos. The movie plot tells a story centered on Ringo Starr’s magical ring which is stuck on his finger and is needed by a cult to sacrifice a woman to the goddess Kaili. We see the fab four adventuring into several peculiar situations like coming across a mad scientist, fleeing to the Austrian Alps for refugee and subsequently to the Bahamas. Throughout the movie we watch and listen to The Beatles performing songs such as “Help!”, “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”, “Ticket to Ride” and “The Night Before” among many others. Directed by Richard Lester, who had also directed “A Hard Day’s Night”, “Help!” it’s essentially an adventure/comedy made in classic Beatles movies style inspired by the Marx Brothers classic “Duck Soup” and directly satirical of the James Bond series of films as the band stated. Also, it’s strongly influenced by the abstract humour of British Radio comedy “The Goon Show”. The Beatles later said the film was shot in a “haze of marijuana”. According to Starr, during the Austrian Alps film shooting, he and McCartney ran off over the hill from the “curling” scene set to smoke a joint, Harrison also admitted that they were smoking marijuana on the plane ride all the way to the Bahamas. An absolute commercial success, the movie had a budget of $1.5 million and end up earning $12,066,667. Aside of The Beatles members, other actors starring in “Help!” are Leo McKern, Eleanor Bron, Victor Spinetti, John Bluthal, Roy Kinnear and Patrick Cargill. On August 6, 1965, the soundtrack to the album was released, another instant classic for the band, featuring several hit singles and memorable Beatles songs, remaining one of their best.
