One of the most influential bands of the last 40 years, Metallica’s adventure begun during the early 1980’s when James Hetfield answered a classified advertisement by drummer Lars Ulrich in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler on October 1981. James Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963 in Downey, California and from a young age displayed musical talent, starting first by learning piano as a child. He has cited both as a singer and as a guitarist, Queen, Aerosmith , Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Misfits, AC/DC, Cheap Trick, Rush, Van Halen, Blue Öyster Cult, Scorpions, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Ramones, Motörhead, Sex Pistols, Venom, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Clash, Ted Nugent, Rainbow, and Deep Purple as his main influences and what influenced Metallica’s sound. Metallica has won nine Grammy Awards and released ten studio albums, three live albums, four extended plays and 24 singles. Metallica popularized Trash Metal during the 1980’s with their albums “Kill’ Em All”, “Ride The Lightning” and “Master Of Puppets”. During the 1990’s they switched their musical direction from Trash Metal to Hard Rock and released the best selling “Metallica”, known as “The Black Album” in 1991 which contributed to an increase of their popularity worldwide and earned them a string of hit songs. During the mid 90’s the band again changed direction towards a more commercial kind of Rock music, heard in particular on the albums “Load” and “Reload”. During the 2000’s and 2010’s they been trying to get back at their original formula, however, not with the same critical acclaim as they had back in the 1980’s and criticized by some of the original fans. Despite all that, Metallica have made some of Rock and Metal most enduring songs that have influenced countless bands. We list what we think are The Top 20 Metallica Songs.
