Electronic music legend Moby turns 54 today

During the late 1990’s, Moby became one of the most successful artists of the decade, but Moby, who was born Richard Melville Hall in Harlem, New York City on September 11, 1965, actually started off his music career through a very different genre from the one he’s famous for. During the 1980’s, Moby joined and played several New York underground Punk Rock bands, but by the end of the decade, in 1989, his growing interest in Electronic and Dance music led him to switch music directions. The 1991 single “Go” was his mainstream breakthrough, reaching No. 10 in the United Kingdom, but the real breakthrough came later in the decade with his best selling 1999 album “Play” that sold 12 million copies worldwide,  produced several hits including “Porcelain”, Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?”, “Natural Blues” and “Find My Baby”. Moby’s career in general as well as his popularity, slowed down after the initial 1999/2000 success of “Play”, which had each track licensed to films, television shows, and commercials, but he still scored a minor hit with the 2002 “We Are All Made of Stars” from his album “18”. His later work, are albums that explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release “Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep” in 2016, in a way, Moby returned to the underground scene, where his career begun. Aside of his music career, Moby who is a Vegan, also owns Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He’s also an author and has published four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs, “Porcelain: A Memoir”, 2016 and more recently in 2019 “Then It Fell Apart”.
