“Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” by Milli Vanilli goes No. 1 in 1989
The German pop duo who became worldwide famous during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s with a string of pop and dance hits from their 1989 album “All Or Nothing”, scored their second U.S No.1 with the ballad “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” on September 23, 1989, that ran for two weeks on the top of the chart. Their biggest hits included “All Or Nothing”, “Blame It On The Rain”, “Girl You Know It’s True” and “Baby Don’t Forget My Number”. “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” earned them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist on 21 February 1990, however, the scandal broke up in 1990 for the duo. Unlike the international release of “All or Nothing”, the inserts for the American version of the album explicitly attributed the vocals to Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus (the two members). This prompted singer Charles Shaw to reveal in December 1989 that he was one of the three actual singers on the album and that Pilatus and Morvan were impostors. The first public sign that the group was lip-synching came on 21 July 1989, during a live performance on MTV. The band returned their Grammy and retired from the music scene as Milli Vanilli, both members tried to pursue a solo career without the same level of success. They recorded a comeback album in 1998, but Rob Pilatus died before it was released.
