The fabulous David Lee Roth turns 69 today

David Lee Roth or “Diamond Dave”, it’s been one of Rock’s most popular entertainments over the last 40 plus years, not just a singer, Lee Roth loves to act on stage and entertain. He was born on October 10th, 1954 in Bloomington, Indiana, Roth who is from Portuguese ancestry , he moved often during the time he was a child and a teen. While living in Pasadena, California in his teens, Roth “bounced around” a number of schools and saw a psychiatrist for three years, eventually attending a ranch for troubled teens where he cared for a horse to build a sense of responsibility. In 1974 he joined Van Halen when the band was still known as Mammoth, their first album, “Van Halen”, released in 1978 became a worldwide sales success, producing Rock hits such as “Running With The Devil” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love”.  Roth is often credited with promoting Van Halen’s image as the quintessential rock band, one devoted to a lifestyle described by David Fricke in Rolling Stone as “a nonstop booze-and-babes party train.” Despite this wild image, Roth was a key to the band’s success both as lead singer and as their principal lyricist.. Van Halen enjoyed a big wave of success with Roth as their frontman, in 1984 they had another smash hit album “1984” that included the hits “Jump” and “Hot For The Teacher” among others. In early 1985, while still a member of Van Halen,  Roth released “Crazy from the Heat”, a popular solo EP of off-beat standards. Singles for “California Girls” and “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” and later “That’s Life”,  succeeded largely due to innovative music videos  which featured ridiculous characters created by Roth, his solo music videos became widely popular during the 1980’s. Roth formally parted ways with Van Halen in 1985 due to to some internal feud among the members of the band. He devoted time to his solo career for the rest of the decade and in 1996,  briefly reunited with Van Halen, to great public fanfare. After an infamous appearance at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards during which Roth and Eddie Van Halen reportedly threatened each other, Roth was passed over for Van Halen’s vocalist job in favor of Extreme’s Gary Cherone. In 2007, after much anticipation, Billboard.com reported that Roth would rejoin Van Halen for a 40-date arena and amphitheater tour in mid-2007.  While Lee Roth still played with Van Halen  during the last few years and at the same time doing other solo and side projects, it is uncertain now with Eddie Van Halen gone if the band will ever play again together. Today, David Lee Roth turns 69.
