Marie Fredriksson, the Roxette lead singer has died ate age 61 it was announced today, following a long term illness related to brain cancer, that she had been suffering from 17 years.
Marie was born Gun-Marie Fredriksson on May 30, 1958, in Össjö, Sweden. During her teens as she discovered artists such as Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, and Deep Purple that influenced her to pursue a musical career. She formed Roxette with Per Gessle in 1986, the duo went on to achieve four U.S. #1’s and two #2’s, with their albums “Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” attaining platinum status in a number of countries of countries around the world. They had an impressive string of hit songs such as “The Look”, “Dressed for Success”, “Listen to Your Heart”, “It Must Have Been Love”, “Joyride”, “Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)”, “Spending My Time”, “How Do You Do!”, “Sleeping in My Car” and “Crash! Boom! Bang!”. After Roxette released “Have a Nice Day” in 1999 and Room Service in 2001 to moderate success, Fredriksson released a solo greatest hits album under the title “Äntligen – Marie Fredrikssons bästa 1984–2000”, followed by a summer tour. Shortly after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and after intensive months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she was cured, however, the lasting effects of a tumor include her being permanently blinded in her right eye, as well as being unable to read or write. She was also unable to speak for a considerable period of time. In 2009 Fredriksson’s made a guest appearance with Per Gessle in Amsterdam, and Roxette started to perform live again. Initially, this was during the Night of the Proms concert series in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany in 2009, later followed by extensive concert tours in 2010, 2011 and 2012, performing over 100 shows on all 6 continents. Roxette went on what was to be their last World Tour in 2015, celebrating their 30th Anniversary (formed in 1986). In April 2016 the tour was canceled due to concerns about Fredriksson’s health. The 10th Roxette studio album was released in June 2016 with the first single of the record released in April.
