For eight years, ABBA scored an impressive string or chain, of No.1 hits all over the planet
ABBA’s co-founder and songwriter Benny Andersson turns 73, look back at 10 of the very best songs from the Swedish Pop music phenomenon
Born in the Vasastan district of Stockholm on December 16, 1946, ABBA’s co-founder and one of the main songwriters of the legendary Swedish Pop band, Benny Andersson was destined to music since his early years. A self taught musician, Benny left school aged 15 to perform at youth music clubs. During the 1960’s he was in several Swedish Pop and Rock bands scoring local hits that didn’t made it outside Scandinavia. In 1966 he first met Björn Ulvaeus, and in 1969, after submitting one song to the Swedish Eurovision Song Festival finals, he came across Anni-Frid Lyngstad and almost at the same time Agnetha Fältskog. ABBA was formed in 1972, and quickly became a Swedish Pop sensation, but their international breakthrough came in 1974 when the band won the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden with “Waterloo”. During the next eight years, Andersson and Ulvaeus wrote music for and produced eight studio albums with ABBA. The unexpected music phenomenon conquered the planet scoring a string, or chain, of No.1 hits all over the world, turning the band into one of the best selling ones of all time, even to this day, almost 40 years after their break up in 1982. Over the years, ABBA have declined huge amounts of money to do a reunion tour, and even millions for only one night concert. Still, their popularity remains as big as back in the 1970’s, and with the Hollywood movies “Mamma Mia!” and it’s sequel helping to keep that status. Today that Benny Andersson turns 73, here’s 10 of the very best ABBA songs.
