A Brief Overlook on Mick Taylor’s career with the Rolling Stones

One of the best and most influential Rock guitarists of all time, Mick Taylor, born in Welwyn Garden City, England on January 17, 1949, started his professional music career when he joined the John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1966 at the young age of 17. He came to prominence when in 1969, at age 20, joined the Rolling Stones as a replacement for the band’s founder and multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones. According to Taylor, when he was first called to record with the Stones he thought he was being called in to be a session musician, but shortly after he was invited to join the band. His first studio recordings with the Stones were the songs “Country Honk” and “Live With Me” for the album Let It Bleed, and on the single “Honky Tonk Women”. Ironically, his onstage/live debut with the band was at the Brian Jones tribute concert in Hyde Park, London, July 5, 1969. The free concert had initially been projected to serve as Mick Taylor’s presentation to the public, but Brian Jones’s unexpected death two days earlier, turned it into a tribute. Taylor is regarded as one of the finest guitarists to have played with the band with his valuable contributions on seminal Stones albums during the early 1970’s. With the band, he fully recorded “Sticky Fingers” (1971), “Exile on Main St.” (1972), “Goats Head Soup” (1973) and “It’s Only Rock N’ Roll” (1974). He also recorded among others, the Stones 1969 live album ” Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!”, a a member of the band, he can be seen on the Rolling Stones concert and tour documentaries “The Stones in the Park”, “Gimme Shelter” (1970) and “Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones” (1974). Despite all the achievements with the band, Taylor always felt an outsider, his presence was frequently obscured by lead men Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, who also detained the songwriting monopoly. This played a key role on the decision Taylor made to leave the band in 1974. For several times he noticed that he was not being given songwriting credit in his own compositions and songs co-written with Jagger or Richards, most notably “Sway” and “Moonlight Mile” from “Sticky Fingers” and “Till the Next Goodbye” and “Time Waits for No One” from “It’s Only Rock N’Roll”. In December 1974 he abruptly quit the band, communicating his decision during a party in London, which came as a shock. Taylor was replaced by The Faces’ Ronnie Wood who remains with the band to this day. In 2012 the Rolling Stones announced that former members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor were expected as guests to join the Rolling Stones on stage at the upcoming November shows in London to celebrate the band’s anniversary. The tour ended with two concerts at Hyde Park, London, which resulted in the album, Hyde Park Live and the concert film Sweet Summer Sun: Live in Hyde Park. He reunited again with the Stones in 2014 for the 29 dates of the 14 On Fire concerts. Taylor’s highlight of his career was as a Stones member, and today at his birthday here’s 12 of his best songs with the Rolling Stones.
