The popular song became one of his best selling singles
In 1977 benefiting from BBC’s will to stop the Sex Pistols, Rod Stewart tops the charts with “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”
Rising to worldwide success during the 1970’s as a solo singer, Rod Stewart has scored a string of memorable Rock and Pop hits ever since. With his unique raspy vocals, throughout his career, Stewart has been performing several songs written and often first recorded by others that have became smash hits through his own versions of it, leaving the originals often forgotten by general audiences.
Such is the case with the song “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”, a song written by Danny Whitten and first recorded in 1971 by Crazy Horse. This now well known ballad, was Crazy Horse’s signature song, but Stewart, really was able to make it it’s own when he recorded it for his 1975 album “Atlantic Crossing”. Released as a single in 1977, in the U.K and Europe in general, and in 1979 in the U.S, Rod Stewart’s “I Don’t Want To Talk About It” reached No.1 in the UK singles charts on May 21, 1977. The single was released as double A sided one, together with the 1967 Cat Steven’s song “First Cut Is The Deepest”, popularized on that same year by P.P Arnold. Stewart’s version was first released on his 1976 album “A Night on the Town”. Despite Rod Stewart’s version being now considered the most popular, it is a fact that when Stewart’s “I Don’t Want To Talk About It” was released in 1977 as a budget double A sided single in the U.K, benefited immensely from airplay, purposely gave by radio stations, specially the BBC, in order to prevent (or block) the Sex Pistols controversial “God Save The Queen” to top the charts. In the U.S, the single was released in 1979, however only peaked to No. 21 on the Hot 100. In 1988, British pop band Everything but the Girl achieved to peak to number three on the UK Singles Chart with their own version of “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”, which made a resurgence of Stewart’s version roughly 10 years after it had topped the charts.
