Playing Mind Games: “Angel’s Heart”

Angel’s Heart

Alan Parker is one of the most versatile movie directors that you can find, easily. He directed movies such as “Midnight Express”, “Mississippi Burning” in contrast to 1980 “Fame”, Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”, “Evita” and in between there was “Angel’s Heart”, a masterpiece of horror hardly marketed as such, and in fact, it is hard to fit it in the horror genre only. The movie is haunting, dark, mysterious and scary, Alongside with Robert De Niro, Mickey Rourke plays in here one of the best roles of his career. In the 1950’s detective Harry Angel is a New York private detective that is hired by a mysterious wealthy man, Louis Cypher. Louis wants Harry to track down Johnny Favorite, a crooner that has vanished after the end of the World War II and that is in debt to Cypher. Tracking Johnny is not an easy task and leads Angel to New Orleans where a series of mysterious murders to people connected with Johnny start happening. The atmosphere in the movie is perfect, with a raining season in full bloom following Angel as he tracks Johnny and dives further into an occult world unknown to him. Top acting from Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet, “Angel’s Heart” it’s scary, dark and heated, but don’t look for jump scares as in a regular horror movie, this is a beautiful cinematic piece that happens to be a great movie with a great story.
