In 1986 Madonna peaks to No.1 once again with her hit song “Papa Don’t Preach”

Written by Brian Elliot with additional lyrics by Madonna, “Papa Don’t Preach” was the second single released from Madonna’s 1986 album “True Blue”. Combining Pop and Classical styling, the song sparkled some controversy due to it’s lyrical content which talked about teenage pregnancy and abortion, reflecting Madonna’s interest in her Roman Catholic upbringing. “Papa Don’t Preach” caused Madonna’s first conflict with the Vatican, as she dedicated it to Pope John Paul II, who urged Italian fans to boycott her concerts during the “Who’s That Girl World Tour” in 1987. It also divided opinions on a very heated discussion between Women’s organizations and others in the family planning field criticizing Madonna for encouraging teenage pregnancy and groups opposed to abortion seeing the song as having a positive pro-life message. The song was Madonna’s fourth No.1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and also peaked to No.1 in several countries worldwide, including the U.K on July 14, 1986. It remains one of Madonna’s most popular songs together with all her 1980’s smash hits such as “Like A Virgin” or “Material Girl”. The popular music video for the song, introduced a new Madonna image and look featuring her with a more toned and muscular body, and cropped platinum blonde hair, separating herself from the “Like A Virgin” look that had become her trademark. It was the very beginning of the constant image update, that still remains to this day. Filmed on location over three days in Staten Island, New York and Manhattan, the video directed by James Foley, portrays a storyline where Madonna is trying to tell her father about her pregnancy. “Papa Don’t Preach” it’s one of the 1980’s absolute classics and a all time fan favorite. In 2002, a Hard Rock version made by Ozzy Osbourne’s daughter Kelly, introduced the song to a new generation and became one of the early 2000’s most popular songs.
