Peter Gabriel makes history on the 1987 MTV VMA’s with “Sledgehammer”
Former Genesis member Peter Gabriel made history at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 11th, 1987 with his influential video “Sledgehammer”. The song, a now 80’s classic that already had been a worldwide hit and scored #1 in several countries including the Hot 100, had became his signature song and in 1987 at the MTV ceremony it got 9 awards including Best Video, the most awards a single video has won. The famous video features a Stop-Motion animation blend with Plasticine, Gabriel lay under a sheet of glass for 16 hours while filming the video one frame at a time. The video ranked at number four on MTV’s 100 Greatest Music Videos Ever Made and “Sledgehammer” has also been declared MTV’s number one animated video of all time.
