The project was set to make headlines as the marquee showpiece at the Future Innovation Technology and Creativity (FITC) conference in Toronto earlier this year, before Covid turned our world upside down. In an effort to make lemonade from lemons, Groove Guild, a New York-based full service music company, partnered with Chicago design shop powerhouse Sarofsky to repurpose this extraordinary piece into a full-length music video. The video depicts an eerie future of a society manipulated, homogenized and ultimately decimated by technology. This haunting version of “In the Year 2525” features vocalist Jean Rohe, whose vocals perfectly harness the song’s dystopian and prescient prediction. Although written in 1968 by the American pop-rock duo Zager and Evans, the lyrics tell a story that rings true for 2020. The song shot to #1 on the Billboard chart in July 1969 as many technological and cultural milestones altered human history—the moon landing, Woodstock, the first Concorde flight in France, among many others. It is an apocalyptic vision of humans stripping the earth of all of its natural resources until there’s nothing left—which takes on new meaning as we barrel toward the inevitable, severe effects of climate change. However, the video leaves its audience with a hopeful ending depicted by a colorful lotus flower blooming from the scorched earth. A signal of rebirth, a sign that life will adapt and transform with or without the cooperation of mankind.
Our word
Reminiscent of classic synth pop and early 90’s electronic music, this cover of the 1969 hit stands on a place of its own among other artists that covered the song, with its electronic and deep sound harmonies, helping the timeless-subject tune reaching a new audience while also pleasing the fans of Zager and Evans original. It’s a thumbs up.
