The Erotic Outer Space Adventures of Electric Barbarella

Revisiting the 1968 Roger Vadim influential movie

The Erotic Outer Space Adventures of Electric Barbarella

During the highly creative 1960’s all kind of movies were made and Europe had a different set than the U.S on that matter as the movies didn’t had the big budgets that were expected from Hollywood productions and the European audiences were also more likely to engage in experimental cinema than the American ones. The decade started with the trendy french “Nouvelle Vague” with director Jean Luc Godard leading the board. As technology evolves and color steps up, other styles emerges, among it, the new Sci-Fi style, significantly different from the Hollywood one made back in the 40’s and 50’s. French director Roger Vadim, acclaimed for movies such as 1956 “And God Created Woman” that made his then wife French actress Brigitte Bardot into an international sex symbol, reaches the late 60’s with a movie project that was very distant from his early ones, bringing French comics character Barbarella to life in the big screen, again having his then wife in the lead role, this time Jane Fonda, and once more making her a sex symbol, although the producer Dino De Laurentis first choices were Virna Lis, Brigitte Bardot and even Sophia Loren. “Barbarella” doesn’t needs to make sense, it’s an erotic psychedelic adventure and fantasy that takes place in the year 40.000 leading you through an universe of  fantastic characters and worlds, following Barbarella in search of Duran Duran (not the band), she is a sort of space bounty hunter that looks for Duran Duran in order to avoid him to end humanity with his Positronic Ray. She adventures into the world of The Great Tyrant, Black Queen of Sogo portrayed by then Keith Richards girlfriend and Brian Jones ex-girlfriend, model Anita Pallemberg where all sort of experiments and madness will take place.

Filmed in Rome, Italy, “Barbarella” is not a movie where you can expect big budget FX’s, but there is a lot of color as it would be expected during the psychedelic era, cool wardrobe, good acting and an engaging space adventure that crossed the Sci-Fi movie rules back then. This is a cult movie, a classic that you will not get tired to watch, and where you will find many pop culture references that last to this day. The cast was carefully picked, from American Hollywood royalty Jane Fonda to acclaimed French, Italian and British actors such as Ugo Tognazzi, Marcel Marceau, Claude Dauphin and David Hemmings. If you’re a fan of Pop Culture and never watched “Barbarella”, you must do it now.
