Don Johnson Turns 71 today
Don Johnson was born Donald Wayne Johnson on December 15th, 1949 in Flat Creek, Missouri. Johnson studied drama at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. His first major role was in the 1969 Los Angeles stage production of Fortune and Men’s Eyes, in which he played Smitty, the lead role. This exposure led to the more roles on stage, film and television without breaking out into stardom. His big break came in 1984 when he starred on his most memorable role as detective Sonny Crockett on the 1980’s hit TV series “Miami Vice”. The success of the series worldwide, made Johnson a TV star. The series ended in 1989 however Don Johnson was able to maintain his popularity but only starred on another hit series in 1996, “Nash Bridges”. Johnson still works actively as an actor although without the same projection he had back in the 1980’s, more recently Johnson had a supporting role in the 2012 Quentin Tarantino film, “Django Unchained”, playing a southern plantation owner named Spencer ‘Big Daddy’ Bennett. Don Johnson had a series of romantic relationships with several celebrities such as Pamela Des Barres (the famous groupie), Sally Adams, Patti D’Arbanville, Cybill Shepherd and Barbra Streisand but it was his relationship and two marriages with Melanie Griffith that was his most mediatic and famous one, the couple had one child together, the actress Dakota Johnson, they first married in 1976 divorcing that same year and later in 1989 until 1996. Johnson also tried a career in music as a pop singer during the 1980’s where he was able to score some hits with “Heartbeat” in 1986, “Tell It Like It Is” and the duet with Barbra Streisand “Other People’s Lives” both from 1989.
