Revisiting “Vanilla Sky”
A movie about cause and consequence
Revisiting “Vanilla Sky”
A remake of the Spanish movie “Abre Los Ojos”, “Vanilla Sky” it’s a beautiful movie about the tragedy of life and how you can lose everything that really matters on a glimpse of an eye by choosing one of two paths. It follows the story of the young New York magnate David Aames Jr, (Tom Cruise) an orphan left with a media empire to manage that walks lightly through life until the day he falls in love with a Spanish girl, Sofia (Penelope Cruz) , a romance that is set to last only a few hours. Accepting a ride from romantic interest and hook up actress Julia Gianni (played by Cameron Diaz), David’s life course is dramatically changed when the car crashes leaving him disfigured. What happens next it’s a succession of events that lead him to a madness state between reality and fantasy dragging the viewer along with it.
Director Cameron Crowe puts beautiful, -well put in place – pop culture and art references scattered throughout the movie, from the perfect soundtrack (songs like “Good Vibrations”, “One Of Us” etc.) to simple props, images or sentences. The movie is beautifully shot, the photography is good and as for the acting, Tom Cruise embodies David perfectly alongside Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Jason Lee and Kurt Russel, all top performances. “Vanilla Sky” it’s food for thought, will leave you wandering about the life’s choices that we make everyday, some without even thinking that every single one will bring cause and consequence.
