The Cult of The Hero: “Flash Gordon”

The Cult of The Hero

Flash Gordon

Created in 1934, Flash Gordon the superhero was put on film by the second time in 1980, during the Sci-Fi craze years of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Directed by Mike Hodges, in a Dino De Laurentis production, a big hype was made around it when it was originally released. Queen provided the soundtrack (one of the greatest soundtracks albums you can listen to) with the memorable intro song “Flash”. The plot revolves around Flash, the American football hero that accidentally gets thrown into outer space by mad Russian scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov, together with journalist Dale Arden while an apocalyptic day start taking shape on Earth, part of a plan by Emperor Ming to destroy the planet.  This is a movie that will take you on a magical journey, through different worlds and where you really don’t have to make sense of anything, just enjoy the trip, the color, the action scenes, the beautiful vintage FX’s and Queen’s perfect score along with it.  The cast features Sam J. Jones as Flash, the fantastic Max Von Sydow as Emperor Ming delivering a fantastic performance as he always does in everything he does, and a pre-007 Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin.
