Fred Rogers of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was born on this day in 1928
The beloved and longtime host of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Fred McFeely Rogers was born on March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He was an only child until the age of 11 when his parents, James and Nancy, adopted a baby girl. Rogers was a puppeteer and ordained minister who became the host of the TV program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. With a degree in music composition, he wrote 200 songs for the show, including the theme, “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” He was honored with numerous awards and accolades for his dedication to children via television. George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002, for his contributions to children’s education, saying that “Fred Rogers has proven that television can soothe the soul and nurture the spirit and teach the very young”. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood won four Emmy awards, and Rogers himself was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1997 Daytime Emmys. Rogers was diagnosed with stomach cancer in December 2002. He underwent surgery on January 6, 2003, which was unsuccessful. Rogers died on the morning of February 27, 2003, at his home with his wife by his side, less than a month before he would have turned 75. His death was such a significant event in Pittsburgh that most of the front page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette devoted an entire section of the paper’s coverage to him. In 2019 Academy Award winner Tom Hanks played the role of Mr. Rogers in the TriStar picture “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”
