Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin turns 58

Marlee Matlin wrote her name in movie history when she became the first deaf actress to receive an Academy Award. The actress was born in Morton Grove, Illinois, August 24, 1965, and from an early age developed acting skills, despite losing all hearing in the right ear and 80% of the hearing in her left ear at the age of 18 months. Her film debut, the 1986 classic “Children of a Lesser God” brought her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama and the Academy Award for Best Actress at age 21. Years later, in her 2009 autobiography, “I’ll Scream Later”, Matlin revealed her rocky, two-year relationship with her significantly older “Children of a Lesser God” co-star William Hurt, who she claims was physically abusive to her. Other controversial statements on the book, also included revelations about her drug abuse and how it drove her to check herself into the Betty Ford Center and how she was molested by her babysitter at age 11, and by her teacher in high school. Though significantly away from the 1980’s spotlight she once had on her, Marlee Matlin remains a prolific actress and has starred in several movies and tv series over the years, most recently as a regular in “Quantico” and in 2015 in the movie “Silent Knights”, also produced by her. She turns 58.
