Black Box “Ride On Time” Dance classic spends 6 weeks on No.1 in 1989

One of Dance Music absolute classics, “Ride On Time” by the Italian based group Black Box started a six-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart on this day, September 9th, 1989. Closer to the 90’s than the 80’s Dance sound, “Ride On Time” was released during the peak of the dance movements Acid House and Techno Eurodance, it became one of the most memorable dance songs of all time, though struggled to make it as big in the U.S charts as it did around the world, having reached only #39 on Hot Dance Club Play U.S charts. The song was enrolled in some controversy though, it samples the uncredited use of Loleatta Holloway’s 1980 song ‘Love Sensation, a re-recording of the song with uncredited vocals by Heather Small was released in the second week of September 1989, and the original Holloway version was discontinued from distribution. This version was released as the “UK Remix” and contained the same three mixes as the original, but with Heather Small’s vocals in place of Loleatta Holloway. The song was written and produced by the Italian production team Groove Groove Melody, consisting of DJ Daniele Davoli, programmer Mirko Limoni and musician Valerio Semplici, however there was another controversial detail which was the fact that the supposed singer was not actually doing any vocals, the  French model Katrin Quinol was only used as the face and image for the band, this was a common practice in the European Dance music industry during the 80’s and early 90’s, German duo Milli Vanilli was the most famous example of it. Black Box went on to release other several hit songs in the early 90’s always using Quinol.
