Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” tops the charts in 1986
It’s one of the 1980’s most memorable songs, the hit ballad “Take My Breath Away”, by Berlin, written by the famous Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock for the 1986 Tony Scott movie “Top Gun”. However, Berlin were not the first choice to perform the song, was first offered to The Motels, but eventually Moroder thought of the band Berlin, whose hit song “No More Words” he had produced. He has stated that of all the hits he has had in his career, he is most proud of this song. As “Top Gun” became a blockbuster worldwide, Berlin’s single was released, the second from the movie soundtrack album following Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone”. On June 15, 1986 it was issued as a split single alongside the song “Radar Radio” also from the movie and was an instant hit worldwide. It peaked to No.1 in the U.K singles charts on November 9, 1986, and in other several countries, including the U.S Billboard Hot 100. It also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1986. Despite the success they had with “Take My Breath Away”, Berlin never were able to chart so high again and now they’re mostly remembered as a one hit wonder. The ballad remains popular to this day and still gets a lot of airplay.
