Remembering the Pink Floyd founding member and keyboardist Richard Wright
Richard Wright might had been overshadowed by Syd Barret, Roger Waters or David Gilmour, but he was an essential part of the Pink Floyd backbone and contributed to develop their unique sound as a founding member. Always a reserved man, Rick Wright, who was born in Hatch End, Middlesex, England on July 28, 1943, often split songwriting dues with Waters or Gilmour after Syd Barret left the band in 1968. He’s regarded as one of the best keyboardist’s in Rock music and was a major influence on the new Progressive Rock bands during the 1970’s. Wright first album with Pink Floyd “The Piper At The Gates of Dawn”, was released in 1967 and quickly became a Psychedelic Rock masterpiece along with their second album “A Saucerful of Secrets” from 1968. By the early 1970’s Pink Floyd had gone from a Psychedelic Rock group to a major experimental one, releasing albums like the atmospheric “Atom Heart Mother”. In 1973 they release perhaps their prime masterpiece “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, one of the best selling albums of all time. Wright had an important role in all these albums, not only as a musician but as back vocalist and songwriter along with his bandmates. By the late 1970’s the band already had released several timeless classics including “Wish You Were Here” and “The Wall”. During the 1980’s Pink Floyd’s sound started again to change with the departure of Roger Waters. During that period Wright also leaves the band temporally. Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River” in 2014 as a tribute to Richard Wright, being also the last album he recorded with the band before his death in 2008 at age 65.
