The Troggs hit No.1 at the US Hot 100 on this day in 1966 with “Wild Thing”

Written by American songwriter Chip Taylor and originally recorded and released by the American rock band the Wild Ones in 1965, “Wild Thing” became one of the seminal Garage Rock songs during the 1960’s through British band The Troggs version, released in the U.S on April 22, 1966. The Troggs’ single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 30, 1966, and number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1966. Their version of “Wild Thing” was ranked at number 257 on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The heavy guitar distortion featured in The Troggs’s version of the song became their signature sound and puts them in the Proto-Punk category. Aside of “Wild Thing”, the band scored memorable hits with “Love Is All Around”, “From Home”, “With A Girl Like You” and “I Can’t Control Myself”.
