His melodic bass lines are some of the most recognizable ones on Heavy Metal
Judas Priest’s Heavy Metal legend Ian Hill turns 71 today
Ian Frank Hill was born on the 20th January 1952, in West Bromwich, England. Ian is one of Heavy Metal’s most influential bass players. In 1970, together with schoolmate K. K. Downing, Hill formed pioneering heavy metal band Judas Priest. He has been playing bass with the band ever since, and is the only remaining original member following Downing’s departure in 2011. Hill is responsible for bringing Rob Halford into Judas Priest. The two met while Hill was dating Halford’s sister and mentioned that he needed a new vocalist for his band. Hill married Rob Halford’s sister, Sue, in 1976 and they divorced in 1984. Together they have a son, Alex, who was born in 1980. Hill lived in Florida while he was married to his second wife. They had a daughter with the same name. He met his present wife in 1999, and married in 2006. Ian Hill is known for his solid and melodic bass playing, which proved to be the ideal background for the dual guitars of K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton and Rob Halford’s operatic vocals. To celebrate this Heavy Metal legend 71st birthday watch Judas Priest Live at Graspop Metal Meeting 2008 that includes on their set list some of the band’s finest songs such as “Breaking The Law”, “Painkiller” and “Hell Bent For Leather”.
