The most influential Reggae musician of all time, Bob Marley was born Robert Nesta Marly on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Jamaica. He started his career in 1963 with the group the Wailers, forging a distinctive songwriting and vocal style that would later resonate with audiences worldwide. The Wailers would go on to release some of the earliest reggae records and played a key role in spreading the then exclusively Jamaican music, around the world. By the early 1970’s the band and especially Bob Marley were already an established household name in the music scene and the Reggae style was influencing bands like The Rolling Stones in writing new songs based on its distinctive beats and sound. After the Wailers disbanded in 1974, Marley pursued a solo career upon his relocation to England that culminated in the release of his famous album “Exodus” in 1977, which established his worldwide reputation and elevated his status as one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, with sales of more than 75 million records. Solo, and, with The Wailers, Bob Marley wrote and performed some of Reggae’s most well-known songs that remain popular and fresh to this day such as “Is This Love”, “No Woman, No Cry”, “Could You Be Loved” , “Buffalo Soldier”, “Get Up, Stand Up”, “One Love / People Get Ready”, “I Shot the Sheriff”, “Waiting in Vain”, “Redemption Song”, and “Jamming”. Diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma in 1977, Marley died on 11 May 1981 in Miami at age 36. He was a committed Rastafari who infused his music with a sense of spirituality. Bob Marley left many descendants, his official website acknowledges at least 11 children, the most famous one being perhaps Ziggy Marley. Today, 41 years after his untimely death, Marley is credited with popularizing reggae music around the world and served as a symbol of Jamaican culture and identity. He has also evolved into a global symbol of Peace and inspired numerous items of merchandise. Just like other icons such as John Lennon, Marley’s popularity still grows strong conquering many new fans every year.
