Remembering the actor Cesar Romero who played one of the most memorable Jokers
Active in film, radio, and television for almost 60 years, the actor Cesar Romero was born in New York City on February 15, 1907. His wide range of screen roles included Latin lovers and historical figures among others, but his most memorable role was as the Joker on the Batman television series 1965 to 1968 in the 1966 film. Romero’s Joker is regarded as one of the 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time, but for portraying it, he did refused to shave his trademark moustache, and so the supervillain’s white face makeup was simply smeared over it.
Closeted Romero
Despite making frequent appearances at Hollywood events escorting actresses, such as Joan Crawford, Lucille Ball or Ginger Rogers among several others, Romero was a closeted gay man, and talked about his homosexuality with author Boze Hadleigh in a series of interviews published in 1996 in Hadleigh’s book Hollywood Gays. Cesar Romero passed away at age 86 on January 1, 1994 from complications of a blood clot while being treated for bronchitis and pneumonia.
