Reginald Maurice Ball known as Reg Presley, was born on June 12, 1941 in Hampshire, England, United Kingdom. His stage name Presley was given to him in 1965 by the New Musical Express journalist and publicist Keith Altham. Singer and songwriter with The Troggs, he came to prominence with the band’s hit “Wild Thing” (originally by Chip Taylor) released in 1966. This now Rock classic reached No. 2 in the UK, and No. 1 in the US, selling five million copies. Among some of the songs Presley composed are The Troggs hits “With a Girl Like You”, “I Can’t Control Myself” and “Love Is All Around”. He was named an influence to Iggy Pop and won praise from Bob Dylan, and, also got the respect of Punks during the late 1970’s, the rock critic Lester Bangs, called the Troggs the “godfathers of punk”. Reg Presley passed away on 4 February 2013, from lung cancer aged 71. He was born 82 years ago today.
