Born in New York City on June 22, 1953, Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper, known to the world as Cyndi Lauper turns 66 today. Time sure has gone by quickly since Lauper first arrived in the Pop music scene back in the early 1980’s. With her unique colorful look and vocals, Lauper’s debut solo album “She’s So Unusual” released in 1983 was the first debut female album to chart four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with the songs “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, “Time After Time”, “She Bop”, and “All Through the Night” earning Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Grammy Awards in 1985. Her signature song, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, was originally recorded in 1979 by Robert Hazard, however, it is Lauper’s version that remains the most popular one, her interpretation of the song was so unique that most people don’t know it’s a cover or have forgotten the original version. The song gave Lauper worldwide success, her popularity during the mid 1980’s was comparable to Madonna and Michael Jackson at the time. She scored more hits with her second album “True Colors” released in 1986 that featured the now 1980’s classic song “True Colors”. She also was part of the USA For Africa music project, singing one of the most famous parts on the 1985 “We Are The World” song. Lauper has sold over 50 million albums and 20 million singles, Lauper’s acting skills, earned her Emmys and Tonys. Today, Cyndi Lauper has been celebrated for her humanitarian work, particularly as an advocate for LGBT rights in the United States and her charitable efforts were acknowledged in 2013 by former U.S President Barack Obama.
