One of the most prolific actors over the last 4 decades, Julian Sands leaves behind a legacy filled with memorable and iconic roles and characters

The prolific actor Julian Sands was born in Otley, England on January 4, 1958. He began his film career during the 1980’s appearing in supporting roles in films, including “Oxford Blues” (1984) and “The Killing Fields” (1984). In 1985, Sands got his first big role, playing the romantic lead in the acclaimed film “A Room With A View”. In 1986 he appeared in another hit film, Ken Russel’s “Gothic” and soon after moved to to Hollywood to pursue a career in American films, appearing in several of them during that períod.
In 1989 he appeared in one of his most iconic roles, “Warlock”, one of the decade’s best remembered horror films. He reprised the role in it’s sequel “Warlock: The Armageddon” in 1993.
Also during the 1990’s he appeared in acclaimed films including “Impromptu” (1991), where he played the role of Frank Liszt, “Naked Lunch” (1993) playing the role of Yves Cloquet, and also in “Arachnophobia” (1990), “Boxing Helena” (1993) and “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995.) In the 1998 horror-film version of The Phantom of the Opera, Sands played Erik, aka the Phantom.

The actor’s prolificacy continued throughout the 21st century, appearing in several films and TV series, including in the 2006 season of “24” playing the terrorist Vladimir Bierko and in 2013, during the eight season of “Dexter” appearing as Miles Castner, a wealthy international businessman. His last film was “Seneca – On the Creation of Earthquakes” released in 2023.
Julian Sands was married since 1990 with Evgenia Citkowitz, that he met through one of his closest friends, the also actor John Malkovich, he had two daughters with Evgenia and one son from his marriage with Sarah Harvey, a British journalist and author, from 1984 until 1987.
On 13 January 2023, just over a week after his 65th birthday, Sands, a dedicated mountaineer, went missing while hiking in Mount Baldy, California, in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. The investigation was hindered by severe storms that occurred shortly after Sands went missing. Sadly, on June 24th, human remains were found by hikers in the area where he had disappeared and were positively identified as Julian Sands on June 27th. RIP.
