Australian actor and comedian Yahoo Serious of 1980’s movie “Young Einstein” turns 70
Before Yahoo!, the search engine, during the 1980’s, there was Yahoo Serious, the Australian comedian who got famous for the 1988 movie “Young Einstein”. Born Greg Gomez Pead in Cardiff, New South Wales, Australia on July 27, 1953, , Yahoo Serious co-wrote, co-produced and directed his first film at age 21 shortly after being expelled from art school, “Coaltown”, released in 1977. But his name only would became famous in 1988 when he also co-wrote, produced and directed the intentionally inaccurate movie “Young Einstein”, portraying Albert Einstein as a young farmer in Tasmania who derives the formula E=mc² while trying to discover a means of creating beer bubbles, splitting the beer atom in the process movie. The popularity of the movie propelled Serious to stardom which saw him appear on the cover of Time and Mad magazines, and even get his own primetime slot on MTV, however, despite the good run it had in Australia and Europe, it was a critical and commercial flop in the United States. He made two more movies after “Young Einstein”, but was never able to get back the short lived popularity he enjoyed during the late 1980′. In 2000, he tried to sue the search engine Yahoo! for trademark infringement, but the case was thrown out because Serious could not prove that he sells products or services under the name “Yahoo” and therefore could not prove that he suffered harm or confusion due to the search engine. Today he turns 70.
