Eurythmics peak to No.1 in 1985 with their Gospel inspired song “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)”
Released as the second single from Eurythmics fifth album “Be Yourself Tonight” in June 1985, backed with B-Side “Grown Up Girls”, “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)” was written by Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart, the members of the band. It became one of the synthpop duo’s signature songs and a 1980’s Pop classic. The song features a a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder and it distances itself from Eurythmics previous hits “Would I Lie to You?”, “Here Comes the Rain Again”, “Who’s That Girl?”, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” and “Love Is a Stranger”, that were essentially synthpop based, but with “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)”, the band begun a turning point in their career and sound, the song is Gospel inspired, making it also much more accessible to a wider audience than their previous electronic hits, other examples are some of the singles released after 1985 including “When Tomorrow Comes” “Thorn in My Side” and “The Miracle of Love”. On July 27, 1985, the song became Eurythmics only No.1 in the U.K, despite the string of hit singles before and after. Together with “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, remains one of Eurythmics absolute classics.
