Alternative Rock producer and Garbage member Butch Vig turns 68



Bryan David “Butch” Vig, born on August 2, 1955 in Viroqua, Wisconsin, United States, became famous during the early 90’s as the producer for important landmark Rock albums. He started his career as a musician during the 1980’s while at the same time developing record production skills. In 1984 he co-founded Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, where later in 1990 Nirvana would make their first demos for “Nevermind”. Despite having already produced several Alternative Rock bands during the 1980’s, it was in 1991 when he produced “Nevermind” for Nirvana that he achieved notoriety. The same year he was already choose to produce another Seattle Grunge band, TAD, resulting in the album “8-Way Santa”.In 1992 he produced two more landmark Alternative Rock albums, “Dirty” for Sonic Youth and “Bricks Are Heavy” for L7. In 1993, Butch produced another breakthrough album from an important Alternative Rock band, “Siamese Dream” for The Smashing Pumpkins. In 1994 he worked again with Alternative Rock pioneers Sonic Youth on their album “Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star”. In 1995 he put together his own band Garbage, featuring old bandmates and himself on drums, led by Scottish singer Shirley Manson. The band’s first album was a huge success with their debut single “Only Happy When It Rains” becoming one of the 1990’s absolute classics. Butch continued to produce other artists during the 1990’s while being at the same time a member of Garbage. Today, Vig still produces some of Rock’s most famous bands and signs his name on new ones. Though Garbage remain a popular band, he also debuted a new musical project, the band 5 Billion in Diamonds. Their first album was released on August 11, 2017. Today he turns 68.
