Remembering the iconic and influential Lucille Ball born 112 years ago today



One of the brightest TV stars of all time, Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, New York on August 6, 1911. This talented legend began her career as a model in 1929 and shortly thereafter she began her performing career on Broadway, making a jump to movies where during the 1940’s she met her future husband and comedy partner the Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz. It wouldn’t be her movie career though that would make Lucille a star and a legend, it was her successful TV career, which started in the 1950’s with the sitcom “I Love Lucy”, created in 1951 by her and Arnaz, who played the also iconic character Ricky. But despite being TV’s most popular couple during the 1950’s, Lucille and Arnaz divorced in 1960, and she went back shortly to Broadway where she performed in the musical “Wildcat” between 1960 and 1961.
In 1962 Lucille Ball’s career shifted from being an actress to became the first woman to run a major television studios, Desilu Productions, that produced 1960’s international hit TV series such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Star Trek”. Lucille Ball continued to perform as an actress, both on film and TV for the rest of her career until her death in 1989 from an abdominal aortic dissection at the age of 77. Today, Lucille Ball is still regarded as one of the biggest influences in comedy, keeping her legacy intact after almost 70 years of debuting the iconic “I Love Lucy”. Among some of the awards and recognition for her career, Lucille Ball was nominated for 13 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning four times and received two stars for her work in film and television on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
