In 1987 Los Lobos brings back “La Bamba” in their energized version to the top of the charts
The popular Mexican folk song “La Bamba”, that was adapted and popularized by Rock N’Roll legend Ritchie Valens in 1958, remains one of the best well known songs in the whole planet, and that is much due to Valens’s version, but in 1987, Mexican-American Rock band Los Lobos peaked to the top of the charts with their energized version of the 1950’s Valens’s classic Los Lobos recorded the song for Valens biopic “La Bamba” that came out in 1987, and it became the band’s first No.1 at the U.S Hot 100 on August 29, 1987 after it was released on June 20 backed with “Charlena” It brought the band worldwide popularity, together with a two other Valens’s covers “Come On, Let’s Go” and “Donna”, giving Los Lobos the highest peak of popularity in their long career. Also, it retroactively credited the late Ritchie Valens with writing a No. 1 single. The music video, that was heavily rotated on MTV, featured Lou Diamond Phillips who played Valens in the “La Bamba” biopic, was the winner of the 1988 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.
