The controversial Charlie Sheen turns 58
During the 1980’s, Charlie Sheen rose to prominence as one of the most promising young actors of his generation, debuting in several hit movies of that era, but decades of a reckless life style with drug and alcohol abuse as well as an addiction to sex, have weighted heavily on the actor, that was born Carlos Irwin Estévez in New York City on September 3, 1965. Charlie Sheen descends from Spanish and Irish grandparents, who emigrated to the U.S, giving birth to his father Ramón Gerardo Antonio Estévez, known as Martin Sheen, but as an actor, never lived in the shadow of his father or his brother Emilio, despite having chosen the Sheen name for his professional career, unlike his brothers Emilio Estévez and Ramòn Estévez that kept their original Spanish names. His screen debut was in the 1984 film “Red Dawn” alongside other promising young actors at the time Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Grey. In 1986 he had a small role in the memorable comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” also with Jennifer Grey. His first big role was in the Oliver Stone’s Vietnam drama “Platoon”, in 1986, ending up the decade starring in hit movies such as “Wall Street” in 1987, “Young Guns” and “Eight Men Out” in 1988. During the early 1990’s Sheen was still regarded as one of Hollywood’s finest actors, appearing in the 1993 blockbuster “The Three Musketeers”. But his career started to decline as he started to accept roles that were overall viewed as mediocre or jokes in parody movies such as the 1991 “Hot Shots!”. The 2000’s brought him new opportunities though, and a switch in his career, from movies to TV. He replaced Michael J. Fox in “Spin City”, and his performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. But the most successful work he did was in the hit series “Two and a Half Men” which earned him several Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations, and made Sheen the highest paid actor on television, earning a much talked US$1.8 million per episode. In 2011 Sheen was replaced in the series, followed by his derogatory comments about the series’ creator, Chuck Lorre. By then, his personal life was also in decline. For decades he lived in excess, abusing on drugs and alcohol, and despite his marriages, was well known his extra-marital casual sex with Porn stars, that he also dated and was even engaged at one point. After months of rumors and speculation about his health, Sheen came out as HIV positive in 2015, following an alleged extortion by someone who knew his well hidden secret. Sheen admitted that he was diagnosed about four years earlier. His HIV-positive disclosure corresponded with the greatest number of HIV-related Google searches ever recorded in the United States. In recent years he has appeared in several talk shows and reality TV where he speaks about his health condition, making statements suggesting that he was a “warlock” with “tiger blood” and “Adonis DNA”, and that he was “winning”, causing Sheen to be highly popular as an Internet meme. It is now another phase for Sheen’s career, one of his latest movie was “9/11” in 2017, but it doesn’t seems his once prestige as an actor back in the 1980’s will remain.
