Elvis Presley makes his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show
On September 9th, 1956 Elvis Presley makes his first TV appearance on the popular The Ed Sullivan Show. Elvis who had been refused before by Ed Sullivan, known already back then as not being too comfortable with the new Rock N’ Roll acts on his show (he already had vowed to drum Bo Diddley out of television after his 1955 act on the show, when he sang his own hit ‘Bo Diddley’ instead of Sullivan’s request) accepted a second offer for Elvis to appear on the show after the quick rise to fame of the popular singer. In that show, neither Elvis or Ed Sullivan were actually in the New York TV studios, Sullivan was in the hospital recovering from a car crash and Elvis was in Hollywood filming his first movie. The show was hosted by actor Charles Laughton and the performance was filmed from the Hollywood studios. Elvis did “Don’t Be Cruel”, debuted “Love Me Tender”, “Ready Teddy” and two verses of “Hound Dog”, during the whole performance Elvis was filmed from the waist up, this was due to his, then considered, outrageous body movements, specially the hips, however during the second part of the performance there was a glimpse of his full body. By the time he did his first appearance on The Ed Sullvan Show, he was only filmed waist up.
