Back in 1969 everybody knew that Serge Gainsbourg was a fountain of controversy, the clever and talented French poet/singer/songwriter loved to stir the pot and people’s moral and conservative values. He wrote some of the 20th Century best music, some enduring 1960’s classics that were recorded over the years by artists such as Brigitte Bardot, France Gall and Françoise Hardy among many many others But Gainsbourg’s number one controversial or scandalous moments was when he recorded his song “Je T’Aime…Moi Non Plus” in 1969 with his wife to be, British actress, singer and model Jane Birkin. The song originally recorded in 1967 in a duet with Brigitte Bardot, was pulled out from release due to demands from Bardot’s husband, she was having a torrid romance outside her marriage with Serge, and the song, it’s a sex dialogue that includes explicit pleasure moaning. But in 1969, after he begun dating Jane Birkin, Gainsbourg re-recorded the song and it became one his most successful hits, and at the same time too, one of his most forbidden songs back then, like the episode that took place on BBC show Top Of The Pops on October 9th, 1969. BBC refused to air the song that was in No.1 for the first time in their history. “Je T’Aime…Moi Non Plus” caused such a stir in Britain that the original label, Fontana, dropped the record despite it being No. 2 on the charts. A small record company, Major Minor, bought the rights and saw the song climb to the top of the charts, the first French language song to ever do so. The song it’s a major 1960’s classic, and it reflects one of Gainsbourg’s most creative moments in his career, the famous moans and sex talk occupy a strong place on Popular Culture.
