Anthony Kiedis turns 61 today

Anthony Kiedis, the energetic singer of the rock group the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was born on November 1st, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After moving to California to be with his dad, young Kiedis was exposed to and influenced by the world of art, sex, music, and drugs. He started his career as a child/teenage actor in the late 1970’s, some of his roles included appearing as Sylvester Stallone’s character’s son in the 1978 film, “F.I.S.T.”. That same year he would land two more acting jobs, one being on an ABC “Afterschool Special” and the other an appearance in the film, “Jokes My Folks Never Told Me”. At Fairfax High School, Kiedis met and made friends with Michael Balzary better known later as Flea and Hillel Slovak. Slovak had a band known as Anthym and Balzary eventually joined it as the bass player. Kiedis acted as the MC for some of their gigs. They were also interested in the emerging punk scene and caught shows by such acts as Black Flag. The three friends started a band together, although they were already in different bands and adding Jack Irons on drums the following year. The group that would become known as the Red Hot Chili Peppers became a popular fixture on the L.A. club scene. Their 1984 self-titled debut didn’t sell, but the group started to attract a following with their energetic live shows. Often over-the-top rebels, the Red Hot Chili Peppers even performed a few times while only wearing strategically placed tube socks. Longtime friend and bandmate Slovak died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988. After this tragedy, Irons decided to leave the band and Kiedis eventually went to a rehabilitation center. The Chili Peppers’ 1991 alternative rock album, “BloodSugarSexMagik”, was a career breakthrough for the band, selling more than 4 million copies, the album featured some of the bands biggest hits such as “Give It Away”, “Under The Bridge”, “Breaking The Girl” and “Suck My Kiss”, it established the Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of the biggest American Rock bands, riding the wave of the Alternative Rock success during the early 1990’s. Later albums include 1995 “One Hot Minute” featuring the hit songs “Aeroplane” and “My Friends”; “Californication” in 1999, which included an impressive string of  hits “Around the World”,  “Scar Tissue”, “Parallel Universe”, “Otherside”, “Road Trippin'” and “Californication”; “By The Way” in 2002, the successful “Stadium Arcadium” in 2006 that features “Dani California” and “Snow ((Hey Oh))” and “I’m With You” in 2011, featuring “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie”. The latest Red Hot Chili Peppers albums are “The Getaway” released in 2016 and “Unlimited Love” and “Return of the Dream Canteen” both released in 2022. Kiedis became a father for the first time in October 2007, when he and then-girlfriend Heather Christie welcomed a son, Everly Bear. The couple parted ways in 2008. Anthony Kiedis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2012.
