Cher gets her first No.1 as a solo artist in 1971 with “Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves”
After the Sonny & Cher very productive and successful 1960’s career, Cher finally got her first No.1 as a solo artist in 1971 with “Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves”. Despite the many hits she had together with her then husband Sonny Bono, Cher’s career as a solo artist was not doing as great, but that changed when she released the smash hit “Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves” in September 1971. Written by songwriter Bob Stone as a story-song called “Gypsys, Tramps and White Trash”, the song got re-titled after Cher’s producer Snuff Garrett advised the title to be changed and Stone then changed it to “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves”. It became such a massive worldwide hit, that her 7th album “Chér” released in 1971 was subsequently renamed and re-released as “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves”. The song was a comeback single for Cher, not only returning her to the top ten of the charts but also giving her two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 6, 1971. With the famous opening lines “born in the wagon of a traveling show”, “Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves” remains one of Cher’s best selling singles of all time and one of her most iconic songs. It was also her first music video, recorded at The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in 1971, where throughout the video Cher is singing in front of a house wagon and in front of a fire. A second video was made, but it was very similar to the original. In the second video, clips of dancing female gypsies were shown. With follow up hits including “Half-Breed” and “Dark Lady”, Cher’s solo career eventually became bigger than the one she had during the 1960’s as part of the Sonny & Cher duet and she now still remains one of the world’s top performers.
