Originally a 1967 US hit for James and the Shondells, “I Think We’re Alone Now” got re-popularized when 17 year old American pop singer Tiffany covered the song for her debut studio album, “Tiffany” in 1987. At first, teenager Tiffany hated the idea of recording a version of her own for her album, mostly because she thought the song was neither modern enough nor hip enough, but the song was re-arranged to fit the 1980’s sound and trends, becoming a worldwide hit for the singer. On November 7, 1987 she reached the No.1 position on the U.S Hot 100 with the song, becoming also the youngest act to score a US No.1 since Michael Jackson’s “Ben” in 1972. “I Think We’re Alone Now” was not intended to be released as a single and the label’s first pick was the song “Danny”, however, Radio stations started to pick “I Think We’re Alone Now” and it end up being released as a single backed with “No Rules”, ending up as the eighteenth highest selling single for 1987. The song was Tiffany’s only No.1 and remains her most popular songs, throwing her into the undesirable “one hit wonders” bin. Over the years, Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” have been featured in commercials and famous movies soundtracks, even more so than Tommy James & The Shondells 1967 original. The famous music video for the song was shot in a shopping mall in Ogden, Utah, which echoed the way her early career had been promoted.
