Whoopi Goldberg turns 68 today



Born Caryn Elaine Johnson in New York City on November 13, 1955, Whoopi Goldberg, rose to worldwide stardom during the 1980’s by appearing in movies such as “The Color Purple”, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won her first Golden Globe Award. In 1986 she got the lead role in the Penny Marshall’s comedy “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”. By 1990 she was already one of the world’s most popular faces in the big screen when she played the role of Oda Mae Brown in “Ghost”, one of her signature roles. For it she won among other awards, the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture Goldberg became one of the most prolific actresses and also versatile ones during the 1990’s, appearing in several blockbusters including “Sister Act” and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit”, “Ghosts of Mississippi” and “Made in America” among many others. Since the 2000’s that her career hasn’t showed any signs to stop, and not only through her roles in movies and big productions, but also in several animated shows where she lends her voice as well as documentaries. Whoopi Goldberg is also political outspoken, she has marched for LGBT causes, in 1999, she received the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Vanguard Award for her continued work in supporting the gay and lesbian community, and regarding genre is has expressed a preference for defining herself by the gender-neutral term “actor” rather than “actress”, saying: “An actress can only play a woman. I’m an actor – I can play anything.” The much awarded actress is also the owner of a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording which she won in 1985 for “Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway.” Over the last years she has also hosted talk show “The View”, but recently, in March 2019, she revealed that she had been battling pneumonia and sepsis, which caused her to take a leave of absence from show. In 2020 it’s expected for her to reprise one of her most popular roles as Deloris van Cartier in the musical “Sister Act”, adapted from the original movie. Today Whoopi Goldberg turns 68.
